Judge Drops Terrorism Charge Against Luigi Mangione but Murder Trial Continues

Who Is Luigi Mangione?

Luigi Mangione, 27, is an Ivy League graduate who rose to national attention after being accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024.

Terrorism Charge Dismissed in Court

At a Manhattan hearing, Justice Gregory Carro ruled that the terrorism enhancement applied to Mangione’s state murder charge should be removed. This means Mangione will no longer face life imprisonment under terrorism statutes, but he still faces a second-degree murder charge.

Federal Charges Still Pending

Alongside the state case, Mangione also faces federal charges that could carry the death penalty. Prosecutors argue that his actions and writings—including a so-called manifesto—demonstrate clear intent and premeditation.

Allegations and Evidence Against Mangione

Authorities say Mangione stalked CEO Brian Thompson before fatally shooting him outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel during an investor conference. Evidence presented includes:

  • Surveillance footage

  • Written manifesto

  • Other supporting materials

Defense Argument: Double Jeopardy

Mangione’s attorneys argued that pursuing both state and federal cases may violate the Constitution’s double jeopardy protections. The judge rejected this motion as premature, saying it is too early to decide.

Public Reaction and Healthcare Debate

The case has sparked national debate. Some critics of the U.S. healthcare system have portrayed Mangione as a symbol of frustration with high insurance costs and practices. Online groups have circulated messages of support, framing the case as part of a broader healthcare reform conversation.

What’s Next in the Case?

Mangione has pleaded not guilty. No trial date has yet been scheduled in either the state or federal proceedings.
